About

“One tree, two dimensions, one utopia. The golden leaves of the tree against the shimmering monochrome background appear as votive offerings of humanity for peace, fertility and bounty.”  Art Historian, Despina Efthimiou

Maria Chatzilampou was born and raised in Florina, Greece. She grew up in an environment filled with aesthetic and artistic stimuli. She graduated with a BA Hons. Fine Art from the University of Central Lancashire in the UK having as a mentor the great British artist Lubaina Himid.

Chatzilampou’s paintings are characterized by monochrome and emotional intensity. She has developed a visual artistic language of polymorphic allusions, with dream extensions and metaphysical implications.

Among Chatzilampou’s prestigious exhibition history is a major show in 2008 at the European Commission in Brussels, where she received the First Best Achievement Award for the project Polis. In 2010, she had her own column of artistic content, in Kroua-Kroua, a regional Florina newspaper. Since 2000 she has been teaching Art in Public for which she has received several awards including for the 2012 innovative student activity: Kozani, A Place to Dream.

Chatzilapou works across the artistic spectrum, in many media including the design and production of her own jewel-charm to mark every new year, an idea that started in 2011. The 2019 charm was dedicated to the loss of her father, a great muse in her artistic career.

Maria’s work can be found in international public and private collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Florina and the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace in Greece and the European Commission.
