Event-Site: Screenings on The Place of Artists' Cinema

About

Event-Site: Screenings on The Place of Artists' Cinema - a one-night event including a talk by Maeve Connolly and screening programme featuring works by Michelle Deignan, desperate optimists, Laura Horelli, Isaac Julien, Bea McMahon and Alexandra Navratil. Supported by Culture Ireland. Artists' film and video has been marked by a concern with context and site for many decades. Since the 1990s, it has been possible to identify both a renewed emphasis on the moving image in the spaces and sites of contemporary art and a new focus on the social and architectural history of cinema. Maeve Connolly's The Place of Artists' Cinema: Space, Site and Screen (Intellect and University of Chicago Press, 2009) critically examines the relationship between cinema, site and place within contemporary art practice, exploring the production and exhibition of artists' film and video within a range of contexts, from museums and galleries to public art projects, biennial exhibitions and art fairs. The book features in-depth readings of twenty-four recent works, including projected multi-screen narratives, site-specific projects, feature-length films and sculptural installations evoking the architecture of the movie theatre
