‘Lost Time’ presents a remarkable series of paintings of the East End of London painted by the artist Doreen Fletcher in the 80s and 90s, but to be exhibited for the first time at Town House Spitalfields from 10th – 26th June 2016.
About
Doreen’s arrival in the East End of London in the early 1980s coincided with the culmination of schemes for post-war regeneration of the area and the re- development of Docklands. Saddened by the sight of so many closed shops, boarded up pubs and derelict buildings she determined to record what she saw in her community, a project that continued for the next twenty years. Haunting in their sense of desolation, her paintings are reminiscent of the paintings of the earlier East London Group, although Doreen was unaware of their work at the time. With continuing public debate over the pace of re-development in London, these paintings offer the chance to look back at what has been lost and assess the impact of change.
