Roth and Shinohara draw from their background in architecture to cast an innovative look at London’s cityscapes. Instead of using traditional imaging techniques, the works combine the expression of halftone images, with the intricate detail of paper cutting creating translucent screen-cuts.
About
This unconventional approach to graphic artwork is generated through an abstraction process whereby the perforated sheets eliminate the ground and reduce the figure down to its bare essentials.
In “London Voids”, building facades in Clerkenwell, London Bridge, Spitalfields, Highgate and Whitechapel, are captured without the presence of people, cars and colour, challenging the viewers perception of urban environment, time and space.
These depictions emerge from the perforated material whose texture and background bring to the fore a new way of looking at London’s evanescent historical landmarks in the context of a rapidly changing metropolis.
