Riverside Cafe Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition of cycling inspired work by painter- printmaker Lisa Takahashi.

About

Takahashi is showing a selection of popular linocut prints she has made over the past three years, as well as a group of new oil paintings, each one a visual ode to her love of cycling.

he artist’s prints are concerned with collective energy; the coming together of groups of people to create a positive force that is greater than the sum of its parts. In the spirit of the Grosvenor School printmakers of the 1930s, Takahashi pairs down her designs to an arrangement of bold and simple shapes, capturing the dynamism of the subject matter.

The paintings depict the quieter side to the experience of cycling; a consequence of the more intuitive process by which they are made. Through the use of layers of thick paint and a limited palette Lisa builds up images that depict the majesty of the landscape, and the feeling you get when you pause after a morning of hard graft to take it all in.

Lisa Takahashi (b.1981) is a half-japanese, half-english painter-printmaker who draws as much influence from British Modernism as she does from the ancient Japanese woodcuts of Hiroshige and Hokusai. Takahashi studied Fine Art Painting at Bath School of Art and Design and Middlesex University. She has exhibited twice at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and has also exhibited with the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of British Artists. Last Summer her work hung alongside the prints of Edward Bawden at the ‘Linocut Lives On’ exhibition at the Watts Gallery, Surrey, as curated by Gwen Hughes and Cath Kidston. She lives and works in Bristol.
