LIGHT my LIGHT
An Exhibition of Pyrotechnical Art
As an Assemblagist I make art using mainly new and old manufactured objects - resulting in many small and not so small collections.
I generally work in series, using one collection of objects as media e.g. piano parts, metal roof tiles, Meccano, sculling oars, clothes pegs etc. I initiate a series or body of work by ‘playing with’ and getting to know my chosen material in depth. Beside the material itself, I often introduce supplementary materials to make art - plus, importantly, the ingredient of ideas.
My strong design background and developed sense of aesthetics are other useful parts of my process as an artist.
My initial fascination with matches and matchboxes occurred while living in New Zealand, culminating in Pyrotechnical Exhibitions in that country, not to mention acquiring a large collection of pyrotechnical materials. That collection came with me to the United States to be utilised and added to leading to a major Exhibition at my Gallery in Maine.
This current Exhibition at BAREWELL ART GALLERY includes extant art as well as new work made in 2017-18 influenced by my new home in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.
