In a first for the Victoria and Albert Museum, this course will consider the role and impact of LGBTQ art and artists on visual cultures from the Ancient Greeks to the modern world.
It will explore questions of what is LGBTQ art? How have LGBTQ artists impacted on wider cultures? What is homoeroticism? How important is it to differentiate between L, G, B, T and Q in visual cultures?
Over the six weeks of the course, topics will cover gender identity, love and desire, interior spaces, persecution and the law, and the normalisation (or otherwise) of sexual diversity in and through the arts and fashion. Combining lectures, workshops with artists, and guided visits to the museum’s collections, the course will provide a dynamic and exciting introduction to the varied worlds of LGBTQ art.
