About

The work of each artist is connected by their shared experience of spending time together in Swansea, Xiamen and Shanghai. Let's see what happens…is a result of the discussions they had about their work, their lives, the places they live in and their exchange of ideas. A programme of activities and events at the YMCA Swansea will support the exhibitions, including artist talks, workshops, guided tours and a volunteer programme. All events are free, everyone welcome. During his time in China, Tim Davies became perturbed by the changing city of Xiamen. In a multi-screen film installation at 41 High Street, he explores the rapid growth of the buildings in Xiamen as a symbol of power. Also at 41 High Street, see Paul Emmanuel's series of watercolour and Chinese ink paintings, and objects made using recycled materials found in Xiamen, which are transformed in to ‘flies' by a fly fishing expert. Chinese artist Zeng Huanguang re-enacts Occupy, the protest outside St Paul's Cathedral, as an art installation at 41 High Street. It asks questions about the relationship between activism and art, and the power people have to shape their own lives. Owen Griffiths became inspired by the busy markets in Xiamen and Swansea Market. During the exhibition, visit his temporary tea pavilion in Swansea Market, where people can try Chinese tea, and taste pickles produced with the Swan Gardens home for the elderly Chinese community in Swansea. Yingmei Duan is an international performance artist whose work, Happy Yingmei, has been inspired by Oscar Wilde's story, The Happy Prince. In her performances at Elysium Gallery, she creates an atmospheric forest glade in which she meets each person who enters. Inspired by a Buddhist Convent in Xiamen, Fern Thomas focuses on personal rituals which she performs to camera. Visitors will also be able to experience her performances at the Ragged School, as she attempts to communicate with the nuns in Xiamen. Shanghai-based artist, Maleonn will be continuing an ongoing project, Studio Mobile, in which he photographed 200,000 people in a mobile photo studio throughout China. Working with local Swansea residents, Maleonn will produce surreal and theatrical photographs which will be on display at Mission Gallery. A Glynn Vivian Offsite exhibition in partnership with Coastal Housing, Elysium Gallery, Mission Gallery, Ragged School, Swansea Market and Swansea YMCA.
