Laura Moody and her cello play each other. At times they seem to dance in a swirling duet, others she playfully bends the music into open dialogue with her voice, and displays it to an audience with playful enthusiasm. All the while her cello breathes under the rough-love of her bow.
About
It would be dangerous to try to put into words quite what she achieves in the smooth flowing collage of her songs. They ooze a clawing immediacy, each song feels like it is crafted on the stage, built with effortless strokes of wit, rather than remembered and reproduced. They are collages of her experience, snapshots of her interests and emotions twisted together into a sublime narrative.
“If I hear something and can tell exactly where all the ideas have come from and how exactly they’ve been put together, then there’s no magic. I demand magic!”
Defying definition is something that clearly comes naturally to Laura, she is a stark reminder to the world of music of how many more sonic avenues are yet to be explored. The huge diversity of her interests and her skills leave her as unrestricted as any solo acoustic performer you could think of.
On Saturday the 7th of November she will grace the sand-blasted inner walls of 99 Mary St. We hope to see you there.
