'Marginalia' was made in collaboration with Katharine Earnshaw, Lecturer in Classics & Ancient History at the University of Exeter and Mary Quicke, Farmer at Quicke’s Farm, in the summer of 2018.

About

It documents Laura Hopes's literal and metaphorical unearthing of what she describes as 'the entangled nature of soil' through walking, listening, tasting and using metal detectors at Quicke’s Farm near Exeter.

The artist was inspired by the rural themes of the ancient classical poem 'The Georgics' by Latin poet Virgil. Written for returning veterans of war, this long poem describes farming as martial and agricultural activity. Through the process of creating this film, Hopes found that ‘Nature’ is as slippery a concept now as it was in ancient Italy.

Laura Hopes is an artist based in Devon. Her recent PhD project with the University of Plymouth focused upon the relationship between climate change and colonisation. Laura describes her artistic practice as creating, ‘physical, intuitive and collaborative explorations of place.’
