Lab. Talks+ is an event happening over 3 sessions - you can come for one, or stay for all three for full art/science immersion. Each event has different contributors to introduce you to different perspectives and ideas surrounding dark matter and more!
About
During the Laboratory of Dark Matters 9 artists are responding to Boulby Underground Laboratory visit and ideas around dark matter. As part of this month long residency at Guest Projects, there are events including this symposium. Find out what else is happening here.
Session 1, 2.30 – 5.30pm: Get to grips with dark matters and a virtual laboratory visit
Explore Dark Matter with particle astrophysicist Dr. Chamkaur Ghag. Chair of Dark Matter UK, LZ-UK collaboration’s Outreach Officer and lecturer at UCL
Artist Libby Heaney will run a session where we will explore the relationship between dark matter and quantum physics through collaborative weaving and improvised story-telling
Direct weblink with tour and Q&A to Boulby Underground Laboratory 1100m below ground on the North East coast of England.
Session 2, 6.30-8.30pm: Perception and Perspectives: Three short talks followed by a panel discussion.
Dr Chiara Ambrosio’s Art and Science: a Romance of Many Dimensions, talk will draw on cubism, geometry and mathematics. Two of the Laboratory of Dark Matters artists will talk about their different approaches to dark matter:
Lab.Artist Susan Eyre will talk about the ideas behind the whole project and her own work exploring of the origins of paradise and the philosophy of Plato on the shape of the cosmos.
Lab. Artist Amy Gear will discuss her response to dark matter research through a feminist approach, collaborating with a martial arts instructor and using green screen filming to reference the invisibility of women.
The panel discussion will be chaired by artist Elizabeth Murton and include Dr Chiara Ambrosio, Amy Gear, Dr Chamkaur Ghag, and Libby Heaney (latter two from session 1).
Session 3 Supper and Chats - 8.30+
Round off a day of talks, live web link and panel discussion with a squash and chickpea tagine supper at 8.30pm. It's an opportunity to continue conversations and chat to others interested in the days themes. There will be work in progress on display from the Laboratory of Dark Matters artists.
