Illustration responds to our need to interpret the world, and can communicate abstract ideas or deep feelings in an instant.

About

Some illustrations are simple and direct, others take many viewings to tease out the full story. By weaving words into image, an epic history spanning centuries is conveyed in a blink of an eye; a tricky metaphor becomes perfectly clear beneath the illustrator’s pen. Books and illustration come hand-in-hand, the words and pictures nourish each other. We continue to need to tell stories, and in the digital age, book illustration can still be magical.

Ko - ax has been running as an open submission exhibition since 2007, as a platform for local artists to bring their work to a wider audience. It is asking artists who live, work or study in Kent to explore book illustration in a variety of mediums, striving for innovative and creative interpretations.

Meet the artists who have successfully submitted at the Private View on Thursday 3 March: 6-8pm.
