As part of Glasgow International 2020 we will be presenting an exhibition of new work by Irish artist Katie Watchorn.

About

Katie’s work is rooted in the rhythm and particularities of her family’s dairy farm in rural Ireland, often working with fickle materials and dealing with a context which is inherently unstable. Primarily through sculpture, she attempts to worry through her families’ farm life, as her father worries over his animals. She dismays over the possibility of this being the farm’s final generation in her family which has induced an ongoing venture to record it through the mode of contemporary art. ‏She combines this task with a desire to work with agri-specific materials. Particular in colour and purpose, they form the impetus for much of her work. Katie endeavours to create an atmosphere of entering onto private land and place – where the landowner appears to have just departed, giving the viewer unspoken and perhaps congenial access to the dwelling place of a farmer and also that of livestock.

Katie Watchorn (b. 1992, Ireland) lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. She graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2014. ‏Watchorn makes sculptural work which mirrors the activities undertaken on her families’ farm in rural Ireland.  Solo shows include BalehomeBalehome at VISUAL, Carlow, Ireland 2018 and A Calf Remembered at Wexford Arts Centre, 2018. Watchorn recently completed a residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art as part of their IMMA 1000 programme and is currently resident in Fire Station Artist’s Studios in Dublin until 2022.
