Jose Girl and Nick Zinner: Blending Photographic Art and Rock’n’roll in the janinebeangallery during Berlin Gallery Weekend.

About

In 2024 the janinebeangallery will celebrate its 20th anniversary, and we are pleased to celebrate this anniversary with two extraordinary photo artists, Jose Girl and Nick Zinner.

The gallery will present selected photographs by Jose Girl and parts of the series “Slept in Beds” by Nick Zinner on the theme of rock’n’roll.

Jose Girl is an internationally acclaimed Spanish fine art photographer known for her surreal and profound imagery that provokes emotion and contemplation. After getting her start as a self-taught artist, Jose Girl has spent the last decade establishing herself as a visual artist who draws inspiration from themes of music, memory, identity, and the human condition.

The artist sculpts cinematic photographic allegories through meticulous digital manipulation. With extraordinary sensitivity to composition, her arrangements of symbolic objects and figures quietly transform into dramatic scenes reminiscent of Old Master paintings, yet imbued with contemporary cues. Music plays an omnipresent role in her creative process, shaping the nuanced universe she captures in her imagery. Her photographs give form to a world rich in nuances and hints of narrative, one she has shaped through her own distinct gaze.

Nick Zinner is an integral part of New York City’s arts and music scene, as well as guitarist and record producer for the New York rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Zinner studied photography at Bard College and also in Lacoste, France.
He has published four separate collections of his work: No Seats on the Party Car (2001), Slept in Beds (2003), I hope you are all happy now (2004) with an introduction by director Jim Jarmusch, and Please Take Me Off the Guest List (2010).
An exhibition entitled – 1001 Images – of Zinner’s photographs was shown in New York City in October 2010 and in San Francisco in February 2011.
In January 2011, Zinner was commissioned by Lee Jeans to photograph their Winter ’11 advertising campaign.
In May 2011, another exhibition of his photographs was mounted at the Anastasia Photo Gallery in New York City, which featured shots of the crowds at his concerts.
Nick Zinner has produced a number of photography books, including his recent collaboration with Zachary Lipez and Stacy Wakefield, Please Take Me Off the Guest List, published by Akashic Books.

Dodho Magazine writes:

A Joint Celebration of Art and Music

The exhibition at janinebeangallery is not just a celebration of the gallery’s anniversary, but also a tribute to the power of photographic art to capture and express the essence of rock’n’roll. Through selected photographs by Jose Girl and parts of Nick Zinner’s “Slept in Beds” series, visitors will be transported to a world where music and image intertwine in a deep and evocative manner.

This exhibition promises to be a meeting point for lovers of art and music, offering a unique experience that highlights the connection between these two forms of cultural expression. The ability of both artists to capture the complexity of human experience through the lens of music promises to make this 20th-anniversary celebration of the Janine bean gallery a memorable and moving event.
