John Newling was Artist in Residence at The Collection Studio from January April 2008. For this exhibition he will be taking the work developed through its final production process as part of a unique gallery based installation.
During the residency in Lincoln, Newling conducted and documented a series of transactions with members of the public in the High Street. These centred on a set of questions, and a number of gifted objects, reflecting on man's relationship to nature. Subsequent to the residency Newling has collected the images and his writings in a newspaper which will be distributed around Lincoln and Nottingham in January 2009. For his exhibition at The Collection Newling intends to create an installation which will turn pre-read copies of the paper to compost in the gallery, producing a unique soil which will then be added to The Collection's permanent collection of works of contemporary art.
