The exhibition explores the expressive response of two artists working the Sussex Landscape. Both are inspired by the vistas and salt flats of Selsey Marsh and the rolling undulating hills of the South Downs

About

John Hitchens’ work in the exhibition spans a 45 year period

from the 1970s to the present, and explores his continuing

absorption with the organic, changing, nature of the landscape

whether on a grand sweeping scale or reduced to abstracted

patterns of plough lines and hedgerows.

Anthony Garratt is well known for his spectacular outdoor

painting installations which have featured on national TV.

He is primarily concerned with weather and the physical

experience of painting in a landscape. Oen working in the

open air, brushes, knives, fingers, and palette knives all play

their parts in his work, and from the seeming chaos an image gradually emerges.
