La Luz de Jesus Gallery is pleased to present Persistence of Vision, a two-artist exhibition featuring artwork by John Griswold & Maryrose Crook from September 10-October 1, 2022. Persistence of vision traditionally refers to the optical illusion that occurs when visual perception of an object does not cease for some time after the rays of light proceeding from it have ceased to enter the eye. The illusion has also been described as “retinal persistence,” “persistence of impressions”, simply “persistence,” and other variations. An example of the phenomenon is the apparent fiery trail of glowing coal or burning stick while it is whirled around in the dark.

John Griswold began his painting career in the 1980s as a “Postmodern Classicist,” John Griswold has drawn upon his training as an art conservator. He dissects classicist tropes, surrealistically recombining them using historical painting techniques. Inspired by Baroque mythological iconography, his film tableaux are models for his paintings, which are often layered back into the films. With years of experience working with museums, he has published on art, and architectural conservation curated museum exhibitions and developed innovative treatment approaches. John holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from UC Irvine and a Master’s in Art Conservation from Queen’s University.

Maryrose Crook naturally gravitates toward the adorned styles of the Baroque and Rococo in order to reveal the collective ego that blankets the way in which the world is perceived. The extreme decorative style of her compositions also echoes the depravity of nature from human consumption. Crook has shown widely in New Zealand, as well as the United States, Berlin and China. Crook’s work is held in public and private collections in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Germany.
