About

‘Lingering Cut’ is a powerful and immersive site-specific installation created by the Ljubljana-born artist, Jaša. A brick wall blocks the doorway of 73 Tontine Street and shields within it a world that reconstructs a fictional and psychological space within the bleakest pockets of one’s mind; rooms of a memory palace now take shapes in real life. Conceived as a complex, multi-dimensional and multi-layered work that unfolds over time, the installation is another chapter, fragment or stage of an ongoing story of isolation and developing rage.

For over 20 years, Jaša has been pushing artistic boundaries with his uncompromising visions. Bracketing a period of social upheaval and the surge of far-right politics in the West, Jaša’s poetic gestures point to the realities in his home country in Slovenia and the urgency of creative resistance, more so than ever.

As part of Folkestone Triennial Fringe, CT20 presents Surface Tensions 2020 Part 3 (#artunderlockdown): a series of site-specific installations by Jaša (Slovenia), Stefan Bruggëmann (Mexico) and Ned Pooler (UK), that occupy the building façades and project space at 73 Tontine St, Folkestone.

Surface Tensions 2020 is a new artwork series commissioned in 2020-2021 during the COVID19 pandemic and deeply immersed in the traumas, struggles and violence of our times. By presenting alternative perspectives of those in the margins, they explore experiences that confront cultural, juridical, racial, gendered, class and physical barriers, placed in relation to Western identity and nationalism.
