A solo exhibition of new paintings
Awakenings is James Bland's first solo exhibition at Tregony Gallery, with an exciting collection of new work. James's work brings together diverse impulses in a unique contemporary pictorial vision. His paintings are often built up in many layers, scraped back and reworked multiple times, weaving together bold brushstrokes of vivid colour and cool neutral tones. Bland’s subject matter is derived from memory, fantasy, and the magic of the everyday. Often centring the theme of the figure in space - both in his narrative paintings and metaphorically in his still life works.
James lives and works in Kent. In 2013 he was shortlisted for the Ruth Borchard Self- Portrait Prize, and in 2015 he was elected a member of the prestigious New English Art Club. He has won numerous prizes and featured in a number of publications, including US curator John Seed’s recent book Disruptive Realism (2017), a survey of international contemporary figurative painting. Since 2019 Bland has been a member of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters group. He teaches at the Art Academy in London and other independent art schools.
James holds an MA in Fine Art from Canterbury Christ Church University and has travelled extensively in Italy where he lived between 2005 and 2006. In 2007 he received the Janet Konstam Travel Award for travel in Italy and was made artist in residence at the Centro Verrocchio art school in Tuscany.
