(In)visibility of Muslim Women: Race, Gender and Representation

About

We will focus on the issues of masculinity raised in Hussain’s portraits from a female perspective, opening a dialogue about the poignant (in)visibility of Muslim women, the perceived notions of their place in British society, and their faith.

This event will take place in our exhibition You Get Me? in the ground floor gallery. 

Speakers include: Subi Shah, a broadcaster and journalist for BBC, The New Internationalist, The Voice and LBC radio. Bilkis Malek, Director of Transcultural Visions, and Shareefa Energy. Chaired by Sonia Mehta, founder of South Asian Women's Creative Collective London; previously she managed the education wing of the band Asian Dub Foundation.

Following the talk, there will a Q&A with the audience.

About the speakers

South Asian Women’s Creative Collective London
SAWCC London (pronounced 'saucy') are a creative network of women artists with origins from, or a keen interest in South Asia and diaspora. SAWCC nurture independently-forged British South Asian female creative expression across disciplines, offering a platform to share, develop, and promote creative ideas and works . Founded in 2004, SAWCC London is a sister organisation of SAWCC New York.

Shareefa Energy is a spoken word artist, performance poet, writer and workshop facilitator. She uses storytelling and performing arts to explore and challenge issues in society affecting women and migrant communities affected by colonialism and institutional racism. Her poetry delves into a journey of self and mental growth and also shares the experiences of witnessing the world through the eyes of an Indian Muslim woman born in England. 

Sonia Mehta is founder, curator and producer of South Asian Women’s Creative Collective London and Arts Editor for Feminist Disssent journal. She dedicates her time between ensuring women are at the centre of their practice, enquiry of narratives and action around race, inclusion and examining the intersectionality of race, class and gender in the diaspora through SAWCC and as an independent consultant.

Subi Shah is reputed as a British journalist by profession and a documentary maker by passion. Based in UK, she has worked for the BBC, Channel 4, and British Satellite News. Her news stories and documentaries have been broadcast in various international television channels including Al Jazeera, Euro News and Channel 4.

Bilkis Malek is the founding Director of Transculturalvisions. She is also leading the research strand for Singing Cultures. She has 20 years experience in the areas of race and diversity spanning policy development, training, casework, consultancy and academic research.
