About
Into The Woods focuses on one of the most loaded emblems in art: the tree and wherever it is found - in forest, wood, park, garden or in the artist’s imagination. Trees can represent the passing of time, beauty, bounty and morality; invoke primordial fears, menace and the sublime. Graham Sutherland wrote of depicting trees: ‘There is a duality, they can be themselves and something else at the same time. They are formal metaphors.’ Our exhibition shows us just some of the ways artists are inspired by this constant symbol. Exhibiting artists include Harold Mockford, Peter Messer, Julian Le Bas, Sarah Sparkes, Eleanor Watson and Jo Lamb.
