About

British Studio Ceramics is currently undergoing a revival of interest. Programmes such as the History of British Ceramics; international shows such as Origin; and recently, the Ceramics Biennale Stoke on Trent 2011, have all helped to raise the profile of this creative and dynamic sector. In Situ investigates the current artistic practice of several contemporary potters, whose work fuses the British traditionalism of Leach and the early studio potters with European modernism inherited from artists such as Rie and Cooper, and the later free expressionism. The artists within the exhibition explore the changing tensions of these traditions by challenging the function of function with reference to pouring and containment. The work also explores the dynamic between expression and function by pushing the envelope of what pots can do, whilst still retaining the values of the British Studio tradition. Using flair and creativity, the artists contribute to the revitalisation of the traditional in their search for the new. The exhibition contains the work of 12 artists, who have exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally, including Tanya Gomez, Carina Ciscato, Angela Verdun, Sasha Wardell, Loretta Braganza, Jonathon Wade, Jayne Hamlyn, Sarah Flynn, Merete Rasmusseun, Susan Disley, and Emanuel Cooper.
