Drawing on Porras-Kim's ongoing research around the ethics of museum conservation, this talk explores some of the challenges of caring for archaeological collections, while also addressing questions around the institutional afterlife of objects and human remains in museums.
This event accompanies Out of an instance of expiration comes a perennial showing, the first UK exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Gala Porras-Kim. The public programme for Porras-Kim’s exhibition is supported by the Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK).

Biographies
Gala Porras-Kim is an artist born in Bogota and based in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured at the São Paulo Biennial; Gwangju Biennale; Whitney Biennial; LACMA, Los Angeles; and Made in LA Biennial, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. She has received awards including Creative Capital, Joan Mitchell Foundation, and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. She was a recent Radcliffe fellow at Harvard, and is currently artist-in-residence at The Getty.
John H. Taylor is an Assistant Keeper in the Department of Egypt and Sudan at the British Museum. His expertise focuses on funerary objects of the pharaonic period (particularly coffins), mummies and mummification. He has curated a number of exhibitions at the British Museum, including Journey through the Afterlife: Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead in 2010; and Ancient Lives, New Discoveries in 2014.
