Yasam Sasmazer Solo Exhibition - Illuminated Darkness

About

Working in hand carved Linden woodà‚ and bronze, Sasmazer creates life-sized figures of children toà‚ explore many issues and concepts -à‚ all evocative of the raging emotions and naive lusts ofà‚ adolescence and young adulthood.à‚ Theà‚ figuresà‚ are often seen to be occupied in different ways:à‚ imitating their parents, being cheeky, dressing up, and even eating some sort of blood-colouredà‚ forbiddenà‚ fruit. Inà‚ Illuminated Darkness,à‚ Sasmazerà‚ addresses certain feelings that are not inherently part of the human conscienceà‚ but can turn into a waking dream, a nightmare or a frightening shadow. à‚ Shadows often have the power to dominateà‚ humans even if they are unaware of them and in Sasmazer's world, these shadows created out of the reflections ofà‚ light through her woodenà‚ characters allowà‚ her to discuss the unknown, primitive, uncontrolled, dark and unresolvedà‚ subliminal feelings of children.
