What if Van Gogh had a cat? What if Van Gogh lived one hundred years later? What if Van Gogh were a woman? Our desire is to reimagine Van Gogh for the 21st century so that we may reimagine the artist and his role.
About
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most well-known artists, but he is definitely the most famous. His lifestyle, mental illness and suicide have helped to cement his fame, as well as a romantic and melodramatic image of the artist, which persists today.
Through a series of paintings, sculptures, video and museum displays, we seek to ask what if. What if Van Gogh had a cat? What if Van Gogh lived one hundred years later? What if Van Gogh were a woman? The image of Van Gogh as the artist is so prevalent that these questions offer new possibilities of conceiving of the artist, artistic labour, and mental health within the arts.
This exhibition is about what ifs, it concerns itself with possibilities. Our desire is to reimagine Van Gogh for the 21st century so that we may reimagine the artist and his role.
