About
Malathie de Silva is celebrating five decades of sculpting this year. Born in Sri Lanka wealthy Buddhist family, she was awarded a scholarship to study sculpture at Charles University, Prague. She experienced the Prague Spring and subsequent invasion by USSR troops.
Malathie returned to Sri Lanka and developed her carving skills in Ceylon hard woods. She emigrated to UK after her British partner was arrested on political grounds and deported. Finding a studio in the Bussey Building in Peckham enabled Malathie to start carving in different stones. She has since honed her carving skills in both stone and wood. She has also recently started making ceramic sculptures.
Malathie is a buddhist surrealist. Her work is completely unique.
