Ian Giles. Clay Meditation

Artist Ian Giles invites you to participate in a period of collective reflection. This interactive performance explores how human relations can create an energy that is as palpable as traditional sculptural materials.

Members of the public are invited to take part in a meditation using clay.  Taking place in a relaxed environment, everyone is given a small amount of clay to paint each other’s faces with. During the drying period – a measure for the 30 minute meditation – Ian Giles reads from selected texts and his own writings to expand upon ideas present in his forthcoming film (supported by Spike Island and the Centre for Moving Image Research (CMIR), University of West of England.)

Please note – the clay used is designed to be applied to skin, it tightens slightly as it dries and may cause some reddening to the skin as it brings blood to the surface but this is natural. Wet wipes are provided to wash the clay off after the meditation but participants may wish to bring their own towels.

Ian Giles

Ian Giles (b.1985, Gloucester) works between video, performance and sculpture. Recent films explore how human relations create an energy as palpable as traditional sculptural material, that can be collected and negotiated through time based media. He received MFA Slade School of Fine Art, London 2012 and was LUX Associate Artist 2012/13.
