In 2021, Ellie Young was the joint winner along with Kate Shooter of the 2021 Solo Art Prize, a biennial award designed to boost the careers and visibility of talented artists based in South Wales, with a jury of curators and artists deciding the recipient.
Ellie Young’s work combines humour, the absurd and popular culture to delve into deeper human experience through exposure of the mechanics of manipulation via media, Tv and fictional versions of ‘The Truth’.
From the X-files, to Veronica’s shroud , Ellie Young’s cut-out sculptures, painted clay reliefs and lenticular paintings of crowds draw on her own experiences and connection to the narratives of relayed in cult TV series, religious Myth, alongside her own fascination with what is expressed in a face in her observance of crowd behaviour, which acknowledges the individual within that.
“The themes of the work settle around belief - I’ve always found it easy to suspend my disbelief when confronted with fictional worlds films, books and television I become immediately absorbed in. Belief as a religious faith, belief in the afterlife ghosts and psychic mediums, in the truth being out there, belief in art, these things are all entwined in my mind in spite of an overriding skepticism.”
