Hrair Sarkissian: The Other Side of Silece is the first retrospective in the Netherlands of one of the leading conceptual photographers of our time. With life-size photographs, Syrian-Armenian artist Hrair Sarkissian exposes the wounds of conflict in the Bonnefanten.

About

The exhibition The Other Side of Silence explores the diverse ways of which controversial histories are told and disseminated. Audiences are taken on an extended journey across public squares in Aleppo, Latakia and Damascus, through the skies above Palmyra and across the snowy post-industrial landscapes of contemporary Armenia.

Altogether, the exhibition features more than 15 of Sarkissian's most important works from the first half of his career, including a personal exploration of his Armenian heritage in In Between (2006) and new commissions such as Sweet and Sour (2022); one of his most personal works to date. This work has never been exhibited before.

The Bonnefanten has acquired Final Flight (2018-2019) and commissioned Sweet and Sour (2022).
