We are pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Hester Berry - her first here since the virtual sell-out 2017 show. Hester, now established as one of the UK’s most pre-eminent young landscape painters is an artist with an extraordinary ability to transport the viewer into the moment. Her expertise in conveying the qualities of light and atmosphere is such that when viewing any painting, we feel as though we know the season, time of day, how strong the wind and maybe even the approximate temperature! 

This new body of over 30 works represents the large part of her output in 2019, a year in which she has had to factor  in the constraints of the arrival of a second child, and it, predominantly but not exclusively,  finds its inspiration in the coastline and landscape of her home county of Devon, and with some very welcome moments from her travels in France. Her approach is rooted in traditional representation and methods, but she constantly challenges herself and her understanding of “painting” to explore ways of representation. In the words of the artist, “I use the marks available to me as economically as possible, distilling the image/feeling/moment into what is necessary, so that through objective representation there is enough room for subjective interpretation.”
