This work takes the title from Joseph Conrad's existentialist masterpiece.
It is a sixty-minute single screen video projection edited from four hours of footage shot at dawn and dusk on the very same day. It is the view from the artists' apartment in Lisbon of another ubiquitous apartment building. The film starts at dusk and ends in the cold light of dawn and illustrates a strange dislocation between the speed of time and the speed of moving objects, which in this case are birds and aeroplanes. Time appears to be moving very fast but at the same time, objects appear to move very slowly and some appear split into two.
The sound is a recording of the River Tejo in Lisbon using a microphone that was constructed using a traducer and a small canvas and stretcher.
