Six monumental tapestries by the Turner-Prize winning artist Grayson Perry explore the British fascination with taste and class.
About
Inspired by the 18th century painter William Hogarth’s moral tale, A Rake’s Progress, Grayson Perry’s tapestries follow the life of a fictional character called Tim Rakewell, as he develops from infancy through his teenage and middle years, to his untimely death in a car accident.
These stunning large-scale works are rich in both content and colour. They depict many of the eccentricities and peculiarities associated with life in the UK, and are at the same time moving, amusing and thought provoking.
Made in parallel with a Channel 4 documentary series, All in the Best Possible Taste, they are crammed with acutely-observed detail and invite us all to consider our own attitudes to class and our positions in society.
The Vanity of Small Differences is a Hayward Touring exhibition. The Vanity of Small Differences was gifted to the British Council Collection and the Arts Council Collection by the artist and Victoria Miro Gallery with the support of Channel 4 Television and the Art Fund, and additional support from AlixPartners.

8 July and 9 September – Special Sunday Openings
We are holding special Sunday openings at the start and end of the exhibition, so as many people as possible get the opportunity to see the work of this Turner Prizewinning artist in Scunthorpe.
