Here in the Granite City we have granite buildings and monuments all around us. By the end of the 19th century Aberdeen was the world centre of the granite trade.
This small display will explore the lives of the people involved in the granite industry from the tools they used, to the ancient Egyptian polishing techniques brought back into use by Alexander MacDonald (1794-1864).
Through the photography on display you will be able to follow granite from the ground, to being processed in the yards. You will also be able to see the conditions that the stone masons, polishers, saw-boys and even the yard dog worked in, when the closest workers got to the National Health Service and Health and Safety was an infirmary box, and safety glasses made from glass.
Come and explore the collections and stories where you will see granite was not only used for construction and memorial stones, but also within the home in for everyday items from snuff boxes to clocks.
