About

Undercurrents Gallery and Minesweeper Collective proudly presents, from Mallorca:

G.O.D. - CARLES GARCIA O'DOWD
'THE RISE AND FALL OF EDEN'

Surreal Drawing/Screenprinting

"My work as an artist has always been linked to drawing, my main activity since I was a child. Crafting images through this method has always served me as an escape from reality and a way of reflecting my thoughts without having to use words. As I grew up pop culture, the autonomous, punk and queer movements, videogames, comics, zines and travelling have influenced my work in the form of characters, symbols and scenarios.

The idea I am presenting is part of a long term printmaking project that consists in the creation of a cosmogony based on my vision of neoliberal society. A cartoon parody where symbolic creatures and entities come together in each different print to give a glimpse of particular scenes and moments in the history of this universe... slowly surmising it's chronicle."

BIOGRAPHY:

"For as long as I can remember, drawing has been the skill I've put more time and effort into. As soon as I had the opportunity, I decided to go for art studies. I started my Fine Arts degree in Barcelona in 2006 and over the next two years I continued as an international exchange student in the HFBK in Hamburg. The following year I extended my degree course in Guadalajara, Mexico before returning to Barcelona. This was followed by six months's internship in the studio of Le Dernier Cri in Marseille, France and 5 months in Maine, USA, with the Beehive Collective.

University enabled me to experiment, learn and expand; but I mostly consider myself self-taught. I have always been obsessed with comics, animation and video games and during my years in college I was haunted by the stigma of coming from an illustration background; but travelling and discovering other ways of functioning has helped me consolidate my role as a drawer and my way of working by using illustration as my main medium.

My trajectory has constantly been linked to social struggles, the punk and queer movements and various alternative scenes, leading me to search for new ways of providing an outlet for my
concerns as a graphic artist within a contemporary context and building an interest in art that transgresses the limits of galleries, institutions and commercial circuits, thus still preserving a strong commitment to such a classical medium as drawing.

This has led me to a total immersion into the world of printmaking, self-edited press and zines, artist books, tattooing, alternative collectives and, in short, to graphic production linked to the international independent scene. Since January 2014 my main project has been "Projecte Úter", a huge collaborative drawing done together with artist Tonina Matamalas, which started with research into stories about abortion in Spain and ended up mapping out the different forces that perpetuate hetero-patriarchy in western societies."
