GLITCH Collective. The Plaza

Part of MOSTYN’s Festival season The Plaza is an exhibition curated by and with the gallery’s GLITCH Collective. Taking its inspiration from the word's meaning as a place for congregation and lively social activity, The Plaza acts as a platform for further activity to unfold, changing the environment, and the use, of the gallery spaces. 

In Gallery 4, iconic gallery objects are modified to be rideable by skateboard, rollerblade or scooter. Works by artists introduce further play, as an action and a space for imagination. The exhibition also uncovers the surprisingly rich skate history of Llandudno that saw people coming from far and wide to skate the legendary ‘Soupbowl’, shown in images and through an accompanying film programme,

A number of other elements are presented in The Plaza including Question Spaces, a reiteration of an off-site GLITCH project that took place in Bangor in February 2016. This renewed version seeks new answers, from GLITCH collective and the visiting public, to questions originally posed by international artists and curators.

Focusing on the process of getting to know someone, CLASS is a collaboration between photographer and film-maker Ted Oonk and young people from Penrhos Avenue Alternative Education Centre. Different layers present in the work show the interaction between the camera and the artist, the individual and the group. These still and video portraits touch on the tension of school as a place of order and the world outside, free from boundaries and rules.

Artisan tailor, Patrick Joseph worked with Viva LGBT+, part of West Rhyl Young People's Project, to explore our relationship with identity through how we dress. The striking piece produced, The Clothes They Stood Up In, is an expression of the clothes we wear and the clothes we would choose to wear in our wildest dreams.

On the outskirts of The Plaza, artist and technologist Charles Gershom has created a Virtual Reality environment upstairs in Gallery 6. The space will continue to evolve to form a virtual time capsule containing objects made by visitors throughout the festival season.  

In the Studio the festival film programme includes a collaborative project with artist Natasha Brooks exploring the outdoor environment. Films created and curated by GLITCH collective are shown in collaboration with local arts organisation TAPE.

Our festival season culminates on the weekend of 14-16 October with the Gŵyl GLITCH Festival – a weekend of creative disobedience that takes place in and around MOSTYN.
It will be a weekend adventure of unusual happenings that are out of this world! With live music, films, interactive exhibitions, workshops, street food and bar.

Both the exhibition and the festival have been programmed and creatively produced by MOSTYN’s GLITCH Collective, an inspirational group of young people aged 15-25 from North Wales who meet each week at the gallery.
