Geoffrey Farmer mines popular culture to create hybrid arrays of sculpture, collage, video, film, performance and text.
Often working site-specifically and with cues from literature, theatre and cinema, his meticulously constructed stage-set installations pivot on the capacity of social and cultural histories to prompt an active engagement with the construction of meaning.
Since his exhibition debut in “6: New Vancouver Modern” at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery in 1997, Farmer’s work has garnered critical attention both nationally and internationally via exhibitions in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Mexico City, Rotterdam, Los Angeles and New York.
His 2012 installation “Leaves of Grass” assembled a monumental (124-foot-long) historical menagerie of clippings from vintage Life magazines, earning significant acclaim at dOCUMENTA (13). Farmer received a 2003 VIVA Award, a 2008 Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award and the 2011 Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Art Award. A mid-career survey opened at the Vancouver Art Gallery in late-Spring 2014.
