The line as space of movement, is path as well as point. It connects and composes the link between the two solo shows by Elio Graziano and Stefan Reiss.

About

SPECTRA – Stefan Reiss // Flowers will cover everything – Elio Graziano

April 28 - May 01, 2016, 12-6pm

Opening: Wednesday, April 27, 6-10pm
with live performance @ 8pm: OKO and Any Pretty

The cycles of work that one encounters are abstract. Yet both artists deal with the line, each in their very own way and style. Elio Graziano’s painting makes use of it rather as a type line. Energetically it pursues its gestural shape on paper and canvas, expressively blazing a trail: Layer by layer, drop by drop, riddled with elements of collage and frottage. Driven by the methodical objective of free association, a central aspect of his work consists of the simultaneity of cohering elements. Without giving up the momentum of his play of colours, his painting and poetry gives rise to details that unfold uncontrollably in front of our inner eye. “Flowers will cover everything”, floral still lives will be searched for in vain.

Layers and overlaps play a decisive role in Stefan Reiss’ “Spectra”. However in his work the line becomes a carrier for binary or alphabetical codes that makes sound of colourful letters. In sculptures and installations the line becomes a space of experience, refractions and shifts. The third dimension lies down in the plane. Digital drawings based on the straight line overlap in projection and compose themselves within a space, reaching a level of organic and tactile reality. Their layering becomes traceable within the accessible room of the installation. The drawing stretches out into the space and its animated projection places a sonorous play of colours onto the installation. Not just scanning or simply creating an illusion but genuinely drawing us in. Planes and light fracture the room, cast shadows and generate additional moments of depth. We move within this scope, irritated; encounter ourselves within the picture, get caught up in the play of rooms, that generate and find shape within our perception.

In times of digital processes of transformation that determine our social togetherness in the space-time-continuum through parameters of never ending width, simultaneity and availability; we are left with the choice between the heteronomy of algorithms or total renunciation. The search for the right perspective is and always will determine the dimension of the line. Depending on our point of view the line is either making a point or - in the sense of linearity of the story - opening up for the endless dimension of narrating it. Welcome back to the third dimension.
