About

The final commissioned Free Space Project virtual exhibition funded by the City Bridge Trust, is with artist Mahlia Amatina. Mahlia’s exhibition Life on a Spectrum will be available on the website from 20 October 2020. LINK HERE: https://www.freespaceproject.org/blog/lifeonaspectrum The virtual gallery space has been created in partnership with designer Liam Mason.

After being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome in 2015, Mahlia was inspired to share the unique sensory experiences of life on the autism spectrum through her art. Working around the theme of neurodiversity, Mahlia has transformed her signature style of abstract colourism into a unique, interactive, multi-sensory experience that invites viewers to engage on a level that works for them.

Inspired by her arts-led advocacy work on neurodiversity, ‘Life on a Spectrum’ is an interactive exhibit that uses visual art, writing and videography to involve viewers to directly partake. The work builds on previous autism-related exhibitions ‘On a Spectrum – an exploration of Asperger’s syndrome’ and ‘Around the World in 80 Washing Lines’, as well as an arts-based project on ‘Women and Autism’ created in New York City.

The aim is to educate visitors about neurodiversity; to contemplate their own health and wellbeing, and to reflect where they and others may fit on the spectrum.
