Adam Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Fred Cuming RA. Cuming is known as one of Britain's most outstanding, respected and poetic landscape painters. Often considered the modern day âTurner' for the similarity of the brushwork of sea, sky and clouds representing the coastline's mood and tones.
In this exhibition, he returns to Cornwall, the Kent Coast as well as Venice. These subjects are painted loosely with a restricted and light palette creating a dreamy effect. Cuming wrote for the RA âI am not interested in pure representation. My work is about responses to the moods and atmospheres generated by landscape.' Cuming's powerful imagination continuously absorbs everything that is around him and is clearly demonstrated in his art, however, recently Fred claims it's only after 50 years, that he is gaining the ability to feel for it.
Born in London in 1930. Fred was educated at Sidcup school of Art and Royal College of Art, London winning numerous scholarships and prizes. Heis a member of the New English Art, an Associate of the Royal College of Art and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy 1969. He became a full Royal Academician in 1974. In 2001, remarkably he was given the honour of being the featured artist in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, with an entire gallery dedicated to his work. In 2004, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the Arts at the University of Kent. Cuming had his first one-man show in 1978 at the Thackeray Gallery, London, and since then he has had an impressive list of exhibitions and accolades, not only in England but also internationally. Fred lives and works in East Sussex.
