There is distance between you and us, the animals say, except perhaps in death. I am not surprised that ravens long for the apocalypse. And giraffes wish for the collapse of the human world. Lynxes prefer to see wildlife moving through green-fallen cities, where eye contact between man and ape is on par. Some beasts suggest — approving whinnying is heard — that time be reversed. Grunts and tugs conclude that total extinction is also a possibility. At the very least — so wingswing and tail-waving make it clear — all extinct, never scientifically described animal species should still receive a chanted species name. Once animals were messengers and promises, but I no longer understand them. No human can speak for them. We are not even sure when they are talking to us.
