Paintings and prints by Jill Newman all found and recycled objects such as Barbie dolls and shoes on the theme of liberation from fairy tales.
About
I hear stories on the news. People imprisioned, oppressed, missing.
I think about Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, the Little
Mermaid.
I decide to make art with the shoes.
They are lovely shapes and textures.
Some are quite impossible or painful to walk in.
I now start to find all sorts of urban detritus, abandoned on the
streets. I think
About Serendipity and magic – and how mundane it really is.
I want to weave into each art piece, a means of escape, liberation,
discovery. Or simply help to find their sole-mates (sorry!)
I dedicate my work to everyone who feels lost, trapped, dormant,
undiscovered and hope you find release, awakening, realised,
yourself!”
