About

Join us for a Winter Solstice screening as the longest hours of darkness draw in, whilst exploring a moment of change and chance of rebirth. Set in the midst of the Iran-Iraq war, Under The Shadow follows the haunting of a mother and daughter after their apartment building is hit by a missile carrying an evil spirit. The film visually draws us into the darkness and shadow, building angular and expressionist aesthetics to a sleepwalking nightmare.

Babak Anvari’s Persian-language directorial debut is a terrifying exploration of wartime paranoia, an increasingly patriarchal political backdrop, and Islamic mythology. Screened at Fabrica, in the Holy Trinity Church building adorned at Christmas, thought-provoking and thrilling viewing within the religious and spiritual solstice season.

“Arguably one of this century’s most frightening films, Babak Anvari’s remarkable debut deftly juxtaposes the fantastical threat of the supernatural with the everyday oppression of a woman living under Sharia law.” Michael Blyth, BFI.

Prior to our feature screening we will be showing a short reel of handpicked animation to chill your bones (and make you smile), co-presented by One Bum Cinema Club.

  • Unawarewolf - An unsuspecting human falls asleep on a sofa with a surprising side effect! (Phil Hart)

  • Spooketti - This playful mixed media animation will bring the best out in Halloween jokes we promise! (Annie Wong)

  • The Boogily - Abeast that takes many forms and the brainchild of Neil Saunders shows how hand drawn animation comes to life. (Neil Sunders)

Doors & bar open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Affordable refreshments and popcorn stand on site.
