About

RIPON ARTISTS VENTURE FAR FROM THE SHIRE

For almost the entire duration of JRR Tolkien's books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings the central hobbit characters from the Shire yearn for and fight for their homeland, and the greater good of the world beyond their borders.

The hope offered by the sanctity of home when toiling in dark circumstances is a powerful thing and is at the heart of a new exhibition at ART IN THE MILL in Knaresborough titled 'Far from the Shire' (30th Sept until 15th October) with three Ripon-based artists leading the charge in a collective of fantasy-inspired artists.

Devised by artist John Cockshaw, who comes to this fresh from The Great North Art Show at Ripon Cathedral, the artwork on show largely places JRR Tolkien's hobbits at the centre of events or has events witnessed through their eyes. Set in the magical surroundings of Knaresborough near the castle, the exhibition is very magical and adventurous in tone.  Joining John in the show are Ripon artists Jay Stelling and Guy Brady, who in turn join diverse artists and illustrators Tomas Hijo, Soni Alcorn-Hender and Jemima Catlin (the official HarperCollins illustrator of The Hobbit in 2013) who joins the show with brand new artwork.
