JG Contemporary is proud to present Matt Small's upcoming solo exhibition, "Everybody is a Masterpiece." The exhibition seeks to remind us of the inherent worth of every individual, encouraging us to view one another with the same admiration that we reserve for masterpieces in art galleries.

About

Small's captivating and thought-provoking new body of work aims to inspire a sense of universal recognition of the unique beauty within each of us. His vivid and emotive portraits, iconifying young people from under-represented communities, urge the viewer to look deep into the eyes of the model and dialogue with the multi-layered complexity of humanity. Juxtaposing classical portraiture and intricate craftsmanship with bold modern aesthetics, these works are modern monuments that transcend time and embrace timelessness.

Inspired by the lyrics of Three Dog Night's song "Everybody's a Masterpiece," the exhibition serves as a powerful reminder that beauty resides in the heart of each person. It evokes the notion of an infinite treasure, a wealth beyond measure, that lies hidden within all of us. If we all recognized our own and each other's true worth, the world would be a much richer place.

Small's unconventional choice of repurposed materials also demonstrates his commitment to sustainability and the importance of reimagining existing resources. By breathing new life into these objects, he not only showcases his artistic prowess but also encourages viewers to reconsider the value of the materials that surround them in their everyday lives.

The use of found objects as the canvas adds a layer of depth and meaning to the exhibition. It serves as a reminder that just as these objects can be transformed into stunning works of art, so too can every individual be recognized and celebrated for their inherent worth and unique beauty.

About Matt Small: Primarily a painter, London based Small has a strong, compelling style, often choosing discarded objects like car bonnets or old signs instead of canvas for his work. “The theme of my work is young, dispossessed people: individuals who feel undervalued, who don’t have a voice, who get looked over.”

JG Contemporary is an online and physical platform for new contemporary art conveniently located just a few minutes from Elizabeth Line (Acton Main), Acton Central Overground, Acton Town, and East Acton stations. It is easily accessible from Uxbridge Road/Acton High Street.
