Essential Flux (EF) is a performance series of four trios taking place in Berlin during May 20222 dedicated to the process of creative exchange. Building on their long-standing musical relationship, Simon Rose and Nicola L. Hein have invited four renowned soloists to collaborate in trio performances: Audrey Chen - voice/electronics (11th), Paul Stapleton electronics (17th), Marie Takahashi – viola (24th), Viola Yip built instrument (31st). Each invited musicians will play a trio concert together with Simon Rose and Nicola L. Hein (May 11th, 17th, 24th 31st).
While the development of music through intercultural exchange is an important part of musical and social development there is an essential flow of mutual communication. The quest to establish more homogenised musical genres often ignores this aspect of creativity. Improvisation facilitates this bridging and each of the encounters in this concert series will lead to a new and distinct creative outcome.
Rose and Hein have collaborated with many well-known names in experimental and improvised music, in part because of their respective residencies in the US (Hein: New York City; Rose: California). Individually and together, Rose and Hein have a long experience of working with a very wide range of music; both also perform solo. They have been working together as a duo since 2016, performing regularly in Berlin, touring Germany and releasing the CD Shug Monkey (2018). In September 2020, they recorded their second CD (due in May). Previously, the duo also formed the nucleus for two successful interdisciplinary projects: Station (2018) and Train (2020/21), which featured interdisciplinary performances with various artists in Germany.
