De Brakke Grond presents Enveloped In You. Curator Zeynep Kubat has brought together Ugo Woatzi, Anthony Ngoya, Erien Withouck, Aurélie Bayad & Günbike Erdemir for an exhibition in which photographic prints come to life with the sensuality of textile.
About
New worlds emerge in folds and creases, where desires are no longer taboo – in fact, they become wearable. Gently wafting, the fabrics offer scope for queerness and the transformation and performance that accompany the expression of identity. Hand-dyed woollen materials reveal local nature and centuries-old botanical wisdom. Outside on the square, new life is breathed into forgotten and fragmented memories on the flagpole – blowing in the wind.
We often associate photography with nostalgia or documentation: photos are inextricably bound up with the objects or scenes they show. The medium documents traces left in time; a snapshot of a moment to eagerly cling to a memory. Through photographic images, these artists not only give a record of what was, but also suggest who we could be, once we get past the now. By transferring prints to textile, the artists envelop us, each in their own unique way, as if seeking to make the images tangible.
