McGee comments on urban environment and the dance between chaos and calm. Her interest lies in the physical experience of time, movement, displacement and how these impact and disrupt our perception of the world.
About
In her series ‘Conversations after Midnight’ McGee often uses unorthodox methods to create her paintings, applying paint to the canvas and then subjecting it to the London weather. Leaving the work exposed to the elements, the splotches of rain force the paint to interact and move unpredictably, creating a form which is mostly out of her hands. From here she extracts colour and shape to create tension, energy and movement.
Having arrived at fine art and painting through knitwear and textile design, McGee identifies with craft and the elements of building and structure are a strong theme throughout her work. She gained a First Class Hons degree in Fine Art from Southbank University, where her practice became influenced by 20th century architecture and the Bauhaus movement, along with the minimalist artists Ellsworth Kelly, and Agnes Martin.
