This newly-commissioned performance, presented by EAF and National Galleries of Scotland, takes Alberta Whittle’s most recent moving image work, Lagareh – The Last Born as inspiration.
About
Anchored around theories of abolition, rebellion, ancestral knowledge and love, the film melds a collection of scenes that give focus to the strength of contemporary Black womxn, whose individual acts of resistance are bound together through the artist’s conceptual storytelling.
In this new performance, scenes and moments from Lagareh – The Last Born will be re-enacted and reconfigured, encouraging the audience to continue to think about the poetics of abolition and how love and grief can become healing forms of release.
The performance will speak openly about racism, violence and grief.
Supported by the Scottish Government’s Festivals EXPO Fund, Baillie Gifford, Art Fund, National Galleries of Scotland Foundation, The African Arts Trust, The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd, Glasgow, and The Alberta Whittle Exhibition Supporters’ Circle. With kind permission of the Lord President of the Court of Session and the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service.
Edinburgh Art Festival takes place from 11 - 27 August 2023.
