This new exhibition reveals Dominic Welch riding high, his sculptural language in full flow. The inner energy of each sculpted piece is consolidated within the durability of the material, giving a sense of permanence and restorative calm.
About
Continually evolving his distinct sense of abstraction, Welch realises solid, yet fluid forms in Kilkenny limestone, Ancaster Weatherbed, Carrara marble and bronze. Rooted in the natural world, his purity of form is inspired by the organic logic of seeds, pods, shells and fish, suggesting natural harmonies that both calm the senses and spark the imagination.
For many years Welch has continued to explore the repertoire of shapes that have made his name. Gradually the shape itself has become more dominant, and the surface patterning less pronounced, subservient to the thrust of the pure form. The moon-discs, spires, or fish-like images that make up the three main themes of the current exhibition, are carved with indentions or striations only to emphasis their direction and purpose.
Welch trained under Peter Randall-Page, and shares his admiration for Brancusi’s bold, expressive distillation of form. After twenty-five years, Welch has honed a style that is sympathetic with, and yet proceeds from, this tradition and his sculptures have been exhibited throughout Britain, North America, Japan, Taiwan and Australia.
An exhibition of Welch’s domestic maquettes will be on view at the St. James’s gallery and the larger scale work will be on view by appointment at Lord’s Wood Sculpture Garden, Bucks.
