Double distance is an exhibition curated by Esteban King, as part of espac’s new proposals program. The project explores the exhibition space and ESPAC’s collection through a series of pieces made by Ana Bidart and Armando Rosales.

About

The curatorial proposal that articulates these pieces states that, before a white cube –an exhibition model that is characterized for its asepsis, for its establishment of a cutting division between the inside and the outside, for generating a sensation of statism and timelessness, as well as several conventions– espac’s exhibition space is that of a house. Starting from this fact, the project poses different possibilities to inhabit it and to establish special and conceptual relations from the Double distance that the work of these artists propitiates.

Armando Rosales focuses in exploring the physical qualities of the exhibition rooms through works that establish communication between the inside and the outside, intervene the flow of electrical light, abrade the inside walls or use espac’s everyday furniture.

Ana Bidart made a series of graphic interventions that register the passage of sunlight in the patio of this building, pointing out the temporal dimension that goes through the exhibition. As part of her interest in movement, the artist also developed pieces that suggest walkthroughs and relations between the artworks, as well as a mechanism that introduces a kinetic relationship at the interior of the room.

Also, the exhibition gathers a selection of pieces belonging to espac’s collection focused on figurative solutions of anthropomorphic character or spatial representations. However, it is not the case of naturalist works, since in most of them space is decomposed and the body is subject to a distortion, it is found in difficult positions or in movement. Altogether with the works of the invited artists, this selection invites to think how do space and architecture work in relation to the body and the display of objects.

Parallelly, a book will be published, that besides documenting the exhibition, includes collaborations by both artists made specifically for the book. Double distance also contemplates a pedagogical program titled Rehearsals to inhabit together, that consists of a continuous work group with sessions conceptualized and imparted by Ana Torres, Rita Ponce de León and the artists in the show. The complete information of the program can be consulted in our website.
